Abstract

Introduction: There has been no consensus regarding the curative effect of moxibustion in treating neurogenic bladder (NB) urinary retention. The aim of this study was to compare the relevant clinical indicators of patients to whom whether moxibustion was applied in order to determine the effect of moxibustion on NB urinary retention.

Materials and Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) compared the curative of adopting moxibustion with control group were retrieved in the databases from inception until January 2020, including Web of Science, Cochrane Library, JBI, Ovid, PubMed, MedLine, CBM, CNKI, WanFang, VIP, et al.

Results: A total of 7 RCTs including 600 patients were incruited in the study. The results of meta-analysis showed that the curative improvement of residual urine volume (RUV) by moxibustion was statistically significant compared with the control group [MD= 47.78, 95%CI (43.11, 52.45), P<0.05]; The curative improvement of maximum bladder capacity (MBC) by moxibustion was statistically significant compared with the control group [MD=84.37, 95%CI (3.83, 164.90), P=0.04]; The cases of balancing the bladder by moxibustion was statistically significant compared with the control group [OR=5.94, 95%CI (3.61,9.78), P<0.05]; The effect of moxibustion on the white blood cells counts in urine was not statistically significant compared with the control group (MD=-0.02, 95%CI (-0.30, 0.26), P=0.88].

Conclusion: The analysis showed that moxibustion can effectively reduce the RUV, raise the MBC and promote the recovery of bladder function for patients with neurogenic bladder retention, but there was no significant effect on the white blood cells counts in urine.
