Objective: The objective was to investigate the expression of serum pentraxin 3 (PTX 3), small and dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL-C), and lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2(Lp-PLA2) in patients with carotid atherosclerosis and its diagnostic value.
Methods: A total of 80 patients with carotid atherosclerosis treated in our hospital from October 2018 to October 2019 were enrolled in the study and divided into an endometrial thickening (n = 46) and plaque formation (n = 34) groups. In the same period, 30 healthy people who received checkups at the hospital examination center were recruited into the control group. The serum sdLDL-C levels of all participants were detected using the peroxidase method, and the levels of PTX3 and Lp-PLA2 were detected using the double antibody sandwich method. The levels of PTX3, sdLDL-C, and Lp- PLA2 were compared between groups, and their value in the diagnosis of carotid atherosclerosis was analyzed.
Results: The levels of TC, HLD-C, LDL-C, ALT, and SCr in patients with plaque formation were significantly higher than those in the control group and the endometrial thickening group. The patients in the endometrial thickening group had significantly higher levels of TC, HLD-C, LDL-C, ALT, and SCr than those in the control group (P <0.05). The levels of PTX3, sdLDL-C, and Lp-PLA2 in the plaque formation group were significantly higher than those in the control group and the endometrial thickening group. Also, the levels of PTX3, sdLDL-C, and Lp-PLA2 in the endometrial thickening group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that PTX3, sdLDL-C, and Lp-PLA2 were independent factors affecting carotid atherosclerosis (P<0.05 or 0.01). The ROC curve analysis showed that in diagnosing carotid atherosclerosis, the AUC of sdLDL-C was 0.869 with a 1.26 mmol/l critical value, 83.56% sensitivity, and 83.57% specificity; the AUC of PTX3 was 0.812 with a 2.56 ng/ml critical value, 82.41% sensitivity, and 81.15% specificity; the AUC of Lp-PLA2 was 0.757 with a 54.12 μg/l critical value, 78.51% sensitivity, and 75.11% specificity; the AUC of sdLDL-C + PTX3 + Lp-PLA2 was 0.898 with 86.02% sensitivity and 88.41% specificity.
Conclusions: The serum levels of PTX3, sdLDL-C, and Lp-PLA2 in patients with carotid atherosclerosis were higher than those of healthy people, they are valuable in diagnosing carotid atherosclerosis, and their combination has the highest diagnosing value.
