Abstract

 Objective: This paper aims to study the correlation between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and leukodystrophy.

Method: From March 2012 to August 2013, 81 snoring patients with polysomnography (PSG) monitoring at the Sleep Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University were included in this study. The MRI routine sequence and FIAIR sequence perpendicular to the bilateral hippocampus were imaged to assess the severity of cerebral hypothalamic atrophy and white matter lesion-related peripheral ventricular hyperintensity (PVH).

Results: The hippocampal volume atrophy and the severity score of PVH of the patients of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome were positively correlated with AHI, oxygen deprivation index (ODI), and respiratory-related micro arousal index (RI), and were negatively correlated with the lowest pulse oxygen saturation (LSaO2) and average pulse oxygen saturation (MSaO2) (all P<0.05).

Conclusion: OSAHS can cause hippocampal atrophy and leukodystrophy in patients. Cognitive impairment is related to hip- pocampal atrophy and leukodystrophy.
